Letter from the Club Captain
I know from previous Captains they were of the opinion that their year flew past quickly but I can't honestly say that has been the case for me.
I know when I took on the role I was prepared to work hard and put the time in and in the process I hoped to achieve a number of objectives and aims. The time and effort has certainly been a constant factor and some of those objectives have been met but not all. Even so without the support and assistance of some members and staff, a Captain could not really function and for those who have supported me I am eternally grateful.
I won't name all of those who were there for me but they know who they are but there are some that do deserve special recognition. Philip Sale my Vice Captain was a constant source of support and someone to vent with when things didn't go to the plan and help me get through the more difficult times. Malcolm Hyde was my “Go to Guy” for all things Committee and for when a balanced perspective was needed and I am sure he will be relieved now the phone calls and emails will stop. Another person who provided not just me but this club with an ever present and dedicated service was Mick Pond. He has been a dedicated committee member of Boston Golf club for many years and together we came up with a number of solutions to problems and ways to do things that maximised the club's income wherever we could.
Last and by no means least I must thank Elaine Marshall for always keeping me on my toes and making sure I dealt with all those bits and pieces that come up throughout the year that can so easily be overlooked and for always getting the job done for me whenever I called upon her.
For me personally and all of us who join a golf club there is one constant and that is the golf itself. If you don't get to play the golf and enjoy it when you do then what would be the point. I am fortunate that I get to play regularly with a group of members who made me welcome from when I first joined and have continued to support me throughout my time on the committee and make all the work worthwhile. I thank the 11 o'clockers and know they will keep up the good work supporting the club and providing new members with a perfect way into Boston Golf Golf Club.
I have also had the opportunity as Captain to get to meet and play with a number of members that I hadn ́t previously known and that has been a real highlight for me personally.
I was probably one of the unluckiest Captains in recent years when it came to course closures during the winter when it never seemed like It would stop raining. Then came one of the hottest summers we have had for 40 years but whilst other courses were introducing smoking bans, we had grass on our fairways and it was green. Well done to Pete Pearson and the green staff for keeping the course a pleasure to play during the summer months.
We can never forget the volunteers who do so much around the course and club generally and I for one recognise the contribution you make whether it be cutting logs for the fire, keeping the course up to scratch, taking on new projects or undertaking repairs when needed.
Catering has obviously been close to my heart in recent years and the staff have continued to excel and add to their growing reputation and I am proud of each and every one of them.
The Seniors and the Ladies Sections have carried on with business as usual, playing their competitions and matches and along the way making their contribution to the club through catering and organising opens and events. Lady Captain Janet Read has been a pleasure to work with and Stuart Hayward has done a great job as Seniors Captain and made a valuable contribution to the Management Committee. And we can't forget the Rabbits and their Captain Pete Keal who is faced with a situation where the only team selection problem stems from knowing who to pick and who to leave out.
The buggy shelter has really added a touch of class to the approach to the clubhouse and well done to those who oversaw this project from beginning to end. It's these first impressions that make such a difference when we have visitors to the club. On that note thanks must also go to Fran Grant for her hard work to the garden area around the putting green.
As I now look forward to a quieter more relaxing time ahead as I step down from my various roles I would like to wish Philip Sale all the best and I feel confident that he will make an excellent Captain to lead us through the next year and hope that he gets all the support he needs and most of all enjoys his year.
Regards, Lee Francis Captain
